SOMETHING IN THE WATER
This collection explores Black intergenerational trauma, resistance, and regeneration through the ancestral storytelling of Black aquatic history. Rooted in the complex relationship between Black people and water, this collection explores how fashion and textiles can serve as carriers of cultural memory, ecological awareness, and healing. Using water as both a portal and a witness to reimagine sustainability through Indigenous and diasporic ways of knowing, Something in the Water engages with water not as backdrop, but as a central force, both medium and messenger, carrying stories of historical violence, enslavement, survival, joy, and healing. The collection aligns with the concept of the pluriverse, which challenges the dominant Western notion that there is only one valid way to understand and address global crises such as climate change, pandemics, and systemic racism.
Each garment serves as a wearable vessel of cultural memory, honoring collective trauma and the enduring power of resistance. Rather than replicating historical dress, the garments draw inspiration from history and are sustainably created using natural fibers and 3D apparel design software, reducing fabric waste and supporting environmentally conscious design. Something in the Water re-locates place and heritage within fashion, reminding us that fashion isn’t just about dressing consumers. The film advances conversations about fashion as a platform for healing, activism, and creativity.
